On confirmation of appointment a permanent employee may apply for the travel benefit to compensate for their private travel. The benefit is available at two year intervals thereafter but does not accumulate.

The travel benefit is equivalent in value to the actual cost of a first-class return rail fare by the most direct route to the employee's destination within the borders of the Republic of South Africa. It is subject to fringe benefit taxation in terms of the prevailing legislation.

To be eligible the employee must produce a rail, bus or air ticket and boarding pass in his/her name.

The benefit is available at four year intervals in respect of a spouse/registered domestic partner of a permanent employee. The same conditions apply.

Employees appointed to part-time posts will be reimbursed on a pro-rata basis.
