Fringe Benefit on ER Contribution and EE Deemed benefit (FB Contra), with different codes e.g. UNR3, UNR4, UPR3, UPR4, etc. appear on my pay slip. What does this mean?

The Retirement Fund Tax harmonization was introduced with effect from 1 March 2016. In short, total contributions toward a pension or provident fund can be up to a maximum of 27.5% of taxable income or a maximum of R350000pa. If the value is above the allowed maximum, the difference is taxed.

The employee is liable for a fringe benefit on the employer’s contribution. As per legislation, these entries (the employer share to provident and pension funds) are now mandatory on pay slips and tax certificates.

Please note that the values are calculated as per formulas provided by the different funds. There is no effect on your net pay unless the values contributed are above the maximum allowed.
